Laser tattoo removal may result in a superficial burn wound, causing immediate whitening, swelling, and redness in the treated area, typically lasting several minutes. Some clients may develop blisters, crusts, or scabs within 8-72 hours, which can persist for 1-2 weeks or longer. Once the scabs separate, the treated areas may appear pink or pale. Bruising or swelling may also occur, generally subsiding within the first week post-treatment. Although rare, hypertrophic or keloid scarring can occur. Pigmentation abnormalities may arise but are usually temporary except in very rare cases. Primary healing generally completes within 2 weeks, although this can vary. Continued fading of the tattoo can be observed in the subsequent weeks. To ensure optimal fading and removal outcomes, follow these guidelines:
1. Maintain Cleanliness: Keep the treated area clean and dry during the healing process. Gently clean the area with soap and water, then pat it dry. Apply a thin layer of ointment (e.g., Aquaphor) twice daily for three days. Cover the area with a sterile dressing during this time.
2. Blister Management: Blisters may develop within the first 8 hours post-treatment. Do not be alarmed, as properly cared-for blisters heal well. If a blister becomes troublesome, use a sterile needle to pop and drain it, then apply ointment and a bandage. Continue using antibiotic ointment on popped blisters until the skin fully heals.
3. Sunburn Sensation Relief: The treated area may feel like a sunburn in the first few hours. Applying cool compresses can alleviate discomfort and reduce inflammation.
4. Scab Care: Avoid picking or exposing scabs, as this can lead to infection, scarring, or permanent pigment changes. Refrain from shaving the treated area until it is completely healed.
5. Showering and Bathing: Showering is permissible after treatment, but avoid high-pressure water on the treated area. Do not use baths, hot tubs, or swimming pools until all blistering and scabbing have healed to prevent infection.
6. Exercise: Exercise is generally safe 24-48 hours post-treatment, provided other aftercare instructions are followed. Be aware that bruising may occur if muscles underneath the treated area are exercised.
7. Sun Protection: Use a sunblock with SPF 25 or higher, protecting against UVA/UVB rays, on the treated area between sessions. Limiting sun exposure will reduce tanning and the risk of side effects. Avoid makeup or creams on the treated area unless recommended by our office for 48 hours.
8. Itching: Itching is common due to the laser’s dehydrating effect. Use Aquaphor, vitamin E ointment, or hydrocortisone cream to alleviate itching. Notify us if itching or swelling persists beyond a week.
9. Infection Signs: If the area appears infected (honey-colored crusting, oozing, or spreading redness), or if unusual discomfort or bleeding occurs, contact our office immediately. For extreme reactions, call 911 or visit the emergency department.
By adhering to these aftercare instructions, you can ensure the best possible outcome for your tattoo removal process!
